thus the Senate has had 100 senators since 1959.

states—unwilling to give up their equal power with larger
states under the Articles of Confederation—threatened to secede in 1787, and won the day by

power to confirm U.S. presidential appointments, to approve
or reject treaties, and to convict or exonerate impeachment cases brought by the House.

unanimous consent to rescind the quorum call. A senator
may request a quorum call by „suggesting the absence of a quorum“;
a clerk then calls the roll and notes which members
are present. Under the rules and customs of the Senate, a quorum is always assumed as present unless a quorum call explicitly demonstrates otherwise.
The Constitution provides that a majority of the Senate constitutes a
quorum to do business. Holds can be overcome, but require time-consuming
procedures such as filing cloture.
