Според преданията, той е бил епископ, ревностно проповядвал християнството и успял да покръсти множество езически елини, което предизвикало гнева на местния управител Юлиан.Разгневен от дейността му, управителят хвърлил Терапонтий в затвора и го подложил на жестоки мъчения, опитвайки се да го принуди да се отрече от вярата си….
