Предложението бе изразено за първи път официално от министър-председателя на Индия Шри Нарендра Моди. ТогавашниятГенерален секретар на ООН Бан Ки Мун приветства това решение като подчерта, че “обявявайки 21 юни за Международен ден на йога, Общото събрание обърна внимание на всестранната полза от тази древна практика за здравето и благополучието в нашия модерен свят”….
