„a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.“

She added, „Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.“

So the abortion issue may not be „helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,“ said
Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.

Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the
return of the Fair Isle knit. Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear
we’d only pull out from the back of our wardrobes as an alternative to a Christmas jumper (especially the red-nosed reindeer kind à la Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s
Diary) or for a winter sport holiday (specifically for après-ski),
the Fair Isle jumper has now become somewhat
of a fashion statement.

The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island in Scotland and uses a traditional knitting technique
to create those distinctive patterns with multiple colours.
It was brought into vogue by an earlier Prince of Wales (later
Edward VIII) in the 1920s, and has remained a casual wardrobe staple for members of the Royal Family,
including Kate Middleton, whose jumper collection includes at least three
different Fair Isle designs.

Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung, who recently layered
a Fair Isle vest by Molly Goddard over a light blue button-down in a snap for Instagram.

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC
and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.

Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather
than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips
fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With all
due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros. movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips  shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April
2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the
director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would
have cost around 20 per cent less.

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining
static. 

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and
‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with Phillips’
process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making of the film,
with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the
film’s LA premiere afterparty last month

 A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the
decision to film in Los Angeles’.

A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get
through to Todd. And the one thing about genre stuff:
If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with a Warner spokesman saying the studio
‘fully supported the decision to bring the film to Venice.

Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore
in comic book movie history as the film bombed at the box office on opening night. 

It has only made $114million worldwide against its $200million budget. 

The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as
‘bleak’ and ‘disappointing’ — officially released in theaters on Friday, October 4, but it
only raked in $20 million at the domestic box office, per The Hollywood Reporter. 

Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had earned him an Oscar for
his portrayal in the 2019 film, while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn). 

However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore —
the lowest score for a comic book movie. 

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier
this year and also received terrible reviews — holds
a higher score with a C+.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and a critic score of 32%. 

The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50 million at the
domestic box office during the entirety of opening weekend,
per The Hollywood Reporter. 

Weeks ago, the movie had been projected to bring in around $70 million – but the number has
since drastically dropped. 

Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the
film first released in theaters – and eventually landed a little over $1 billion in the global box office. 

The first movie – which was also directed by Todd Phillips – had a budget of between $55 and $70 million. However, the budget increased for Folie À Deux to around $200
million. 

The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews
from both critics and audiences – and won the Golden Lion during the 76th
Venice International Film Festival. 

Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Joker (Arthur Fleck) – and the film garnered an additional Academy Award for Best Original Score. 

The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film Festival last month in September, where it earned a
12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.

Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just two
stars but credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first movie’s
$1billion success.

Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga
worked hard to bump the ratings up in the sequel,
Phillips appeared to have no idea what to do with her. 

Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the movie proves
‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

for a $70 million debut, which would still have been down a fair amount from Joker’s record-breaking $96.2
million launch in October 2019. 

A number of fans took to social media to defend the controversial sequel

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic
depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element
not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise 

Reviews were mixed out of the Venice Film Festival, where it premiered in competition like the first movie and even got
a 12-minute standing ovation.

But the homecoming glow was short-lived, and the fragile
foundation would crumble in the coming weeks with its Rotten Tomatoes score dropping from
63 percent at Venice to 33 percent by its first weekend in theaters. Perhaps even more surprising
were the audience reviews: Ticket buyers polled on opening night gave the film a deadly D CinemaScore.
Exit polls from PostTrak weren’t any better. It got a meager half
star out of five possible.

‘That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from,’ said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore.
‘The biggest issue of all is the reported budget.
A $40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive movie would be
a solid debut.’

Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first
film to produce, though reported figures vary at exactly how pricey it was to make.
Phillips told Variety that it was less than the reported $200 million; Others have it pegged at $190
million. Warner Bros. released the film in 4,102 locations in North America.

About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415
IMAX screens.

Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens, bringing its
total global earnings estimate to $121.1 million. In the next two weeks, Joker 2 will also open in Japan and China.

Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s
The Wild Robot, which added $18.7 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to nearly $64 million. Globally, it’s made
over $100 million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice  took third place in weekend five, Paramount’s Transformers One
landed in fourth and Universal and Blumhouse’s Speak
No Evil rounded out the top five.

The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White Bird, flopped with just $1.5 million from just over 1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.

Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year, but Joker’s start
is an unwelcome twist for theater owners hoping to narrow the box office deficit.

Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they aspired to make something as ‘audacious’ as the first film.

It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined song and dance numbers to old
standards. Gaga even released a companion album called “Harlequin,’ alongside the
film.

The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some who posit that it
was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie. In cruder
terms, it´s been called a ‘middle finger.’ But fans often ignore
the advice of critics, especially when it comes to opening their wallets to
see revered comic book characters on the big screen.

‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said.
‘But except for a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to
want to know what they´re getting when they´re
going to the theater. They want the tried and true, the familiar.’ 

Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem
started with the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical. ‘No fan of the
original movie wanted to see a musical sequel,’ he wrote on Saturday.

The first film was also divisive and the subject of much discourse, then about whether it might send the wrong message to the wrong type of person. And
yet people still flocked to see what the fuss was
about. Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture and best director, and three wins.
It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing
R-rated film of all time, until this summer when Marvel’s
Deadpool & Wolverine took the crown.

The political revelation – a comment by ex-rock star turned senator
Peter Garrett that Labor would change the policies it campaigned on if it
won government – did not deter his party from romping in on election day.

Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his only witness to the remark Price said Garrett had made.

Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes reporters,
actors and performers, and well-known writers and
sports people are said to be among the lounge’s exclusive membership
of around 6000.

Price went on to defend himself for reporting what some
claimed was a confidential conversation in a private place, but which
exposed him to criticism over his own membership for allegedly promoting
Qantas on his radio show.

an ‘entitlement’. 

Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied
the ‘very, very high-end perk’ gives the airline a disproportionate level of influence over the country’s politicians.

They were commenting ahead of the launch of the
new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston, which has stirred up the controversy. 

A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers – in both Federal Parliament’s
House of Representatives and the Senate – revealed almost 93
per cent of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to the lavish,
all-inclusive lounge.

Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all
his benefits in pecuniary interest statements. 

At a press conference this week, he repeated that all of
his upgrades ‘have been declared as appropriate. What’s appropriate is transparency.’  

Apart from the PM, members include every one of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12 assistant
ministers.

Commission chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman Joe Longo and some of their deputies are members
of the Chairman’s Lounge despite regulating the airline.

A billionaire couple have won the right to remove a single tree from the driveway of their lavish $20million mansion after being blocked by their local
council. 

Paul Holmes a Court, the son of Australia’s first billionaire Robert
Holmes a Court, and his wife Zara had been at loggerheads with their local council over a request to remove a single peppermint tree growing in the middle of their driveway.

The couple bought the four-bedroom mansion in the affluent, tree-lined suburb
overlooking Perth’s Freshwater Bay for $20.1million in August.

They wanted to remove the tree but the Shire of Peppermint
Grove refused the request on the grounds the tree was not dead or deceased. 

‘We are very lucky to live here, but I have to say that the tree
placement is unusual,’ Ms Holmes a Court previously told a council meeting. 

‘I’m quite a reasonable and rational person, but a tree in the middle of the driveway makes it quite tricky to reverse out.’

The couple enjoyed a breakthrough at a council meeting last week after an alternative motion was unanimously passed that allowed the
tree to be removed on the condition they paid a
$2,500 bond before any work was done on the driveway.

They will also need to plant two replacement trees on their property.

‘I think it meets both the owners’ wants, or expectation, but
also matches the council’s needs at the same time by ensuring that
there is tree cover on the verge of that property,’ he
said.

Peppermint Grove is hoping to implement a policy that would even make it an offence
to damage or remove any mature trees on private
property without council approval.

Last month, WA Planning Minister John Carey said he hoped the Shire of
Peppermint Grove would ‘take a common sense approach’ to the issue.

‘This is part of the challenge that we do have with local
government. I’ve always been on the record that we
need local governments to take a common sense approach to issues,’ Mr Carey told
the West Australian. 

‘And I understand people are passionate about trees.
But ultimately, we do need local governments to assess the
situation and find pragmatic outcomes.’

According to the online listing for the four-bedroom,
four-bathroom mansion – which is built on a corner block
along the banks of the Swan River – the sprawling Federation-style property was built in around 1904.

SHANGHAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) – The yuan was little changed on Friday against the dollar, but
is headed for its tenth straight weekly loss amid concerns that new tariff threatened by President-elect Donald Trump will heighten strains on the struggling Chinese economy.

Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as Trump’s policies are expected to drive up U.S.
inflation, but they believe Beijing will prevent the yuan from falling too much.
„We anticipate some depreciation pressure in an expected strong dollar environment,“ Lynn Song, Greater China chief economist at ING,
said in a note.

However, „we don’t expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-à-vis most other Asian currencies.“ The
yuan was changing hands at 7.2549 per dollar around midday, little moved from
the previous close.
Although the currency has rebounded from a one-year low of 7.2996 hit on Tuesday, it is poised to register
its longest weekly losing streak since 2018. The dollar index fell to one-week low overnight and „the USD’s consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building“ in the yuan, aided by ongoing
attempts by China’s central bank to restrain its decline, said Alvin Tan,
strategist at RBC Capital Markets.

Recent data has painted a mixed picture of China’s economic recovery, with manufacturing
activities improving, but property sales in many Chinese cities remaining weak.
China’s „economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature,“ said John Browning, managing
director of BANDS Financial.
He doesn’t expect huge stimulus to be announced during next week’s Central Economic Work Conference,
as „Beijing’s largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins.“ Top policymakers will gather at the conference
to agree on major economic goals for next year.

But the target for 2025 growth, one of the most closely-watched indicators
globally for clues of Beijing’s near-term policy intentions, likely will not be
officially announced until an annual parliament meeting in March.
During Trump’s first term as president, the yuan weakened about 5% against the dollar after the initial round of U.S.

tariffs on Chinese goods in 2018, and fell another 1.5% a
year later when trade tensions escalated. Growth worries and
expectations of further monetary easing by Beijing pushed China’s 10-year treasury yields below 2% to record lows
this week, worsening the yield disadvantage against the U.S.,
and exerting downward pressure on the yuan. ING’s Song expects the onshore yuan to move
within a band between 7.00-7.40 per dollar, but could fall further to

A billionaire couple have won the right to remove a single tree from the driveway
of their lavish $20million mansion after being blocked
by their local council. 

Paul Holmes a Court, the son of Australia’s first billionaire Robert Holmes a Court,
and his wife Zara had been at loggerheads with their local council over a request to remove a single
peppermint tree growing in the middle of their
driveway.

The couple bought the four-bedroom mansion in the affluent, tree-lined suburb
overlooking Perth’s Freshwater Bay for $20.1million in August.

They wanted to remove the tree but the Shire of Peppermint Grove refused the request on the grounds the tree was
not dead or deceased. 

‘We are very lucky to live here, but I have to say that the tree placement is unusual,’ Ms Holmes a Court previously told a council meeting. 

‘I’m quite a reasonable and rational person, but a tree in the middle of the driveway makes it quite
tricky to reverse out.’

The couple enjoyed a breakthrough at a council meeting last week
after an alternative motion was unanimously passed
that allowed the tree to be removed on the condition they paid a $2,500 bond before any work
was done on the driveway.

They will also need to plant two replacement trees on their property.

Ms Holmes a Court previously claimed the tree’s odd placement also made it difficult to spot cars turning the corner at a nearby intersection with Bay View
Terrace.

After the motion to remove the tree was passed at the
meeting, councillor Douglas Jackson said it was
a ‘good outcome’.

‘I think it meets both the owners’ wants, or expectation, but also matches the
council’s needs at the same time by ensuring that there is tree cover on the verge of that property,’ he said.

Peppermint Grove is hoping to implement a policy that would even make it an offence to
damage or remove any mature trees on private property without council approval.

Last month, WA Planning Minister John Carey said he hoped the Shire of Peppermint
Grove would ‘take a common sense approach’ to the issue.

‘This is part of the challenge that we do have with local government.
I’ve always been on the record that we need local governments to take a common sense approach to issues,’
Mr Carey told the West Australian. 

‘And I understand people are passionate about trees. But ultimately, we do need local governments to assess the situation and find pragmatic outcomes.’

According to the online listing for the four-bedroom, four-bathroom mansion –
which is built on a corner block along the banks of the Swan River
– the sprawling Federation-style property was built in around 1904.

July 23 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International pushed the
test-launch of its heated tobacco device, IQOS, in the U.S.
to the fourth quarter on Tuesday and lowered its annual forecast for the
heated tobacco business.

The pilot was earlier scheduled to run in Austin, Texas,
in the second quarter, for which the company reported results on the day.

The company declined to comment on why the launch had been delayed.

Philip Morris has invested billions to promote and expand its portfolio
of alternatives to traditional combustible cigarettes amid stricter regulations and
falling smoking rates in some markets.

The launch of its flagship heated tobacco device in the United States is also facing resistance from health campaigners,
who have written to regulators in the country accusing the company
of misrepresenting past regulatory decisions, Reuters reported last week.

The company also awaits market authorization from the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration for its IQOS ILUMA device, which it expects
by the second half of 2025.

A ban on flavored heated tobacco in the European Union has already hit shipments this year,
with Philip Morris saying the impact from the ban was „slightly greater“ than previously assumed.

This led the company to temper its expectations for volume growth in the heated
tobacco category to around 13% for the full year, down from between 14%
and 16% expected earlier.

However, Philip Morris topped quarterly expectations and raised its annual sales and profit forecasts, betting on demand

LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday signalled a slower than anticipated
U.S. roll out of its IQOS heated tobacco device, a choice
analysts said was positive for its competitors in the
short term.

The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it aims for more than two thirds of its net revenues to come from „smoke-free“ products by
2030, up from 50% in 2025, as it tries to transform its image
from a cigarette purveyor to a driver of the shift to healthier alternatives.

Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry into the U.S., the world’s largest market for nicotine products,
and had been expecting it from May 2024 next year.
Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI is hiring lobbyists across a host of key U.S.
states ahead of the launch.

Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four cities in two unnamed U.S.
states from 2024, but a national launch would only come
after PMI receives approval to sell the latest version, known as
IQOS ILUMA.

The company was planning to apply for approval in October and expected
it from 2025, he continued.

„We need to warm up the tyres,“ he said of the initial launch, which would help PMI fine tune its approach.

A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases, he continued, adding launching in 10 states in the first year would make sense.

Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products in the U.S.
„now looks delayed until ILUMA,“ Owen Bennett, equity analyst at Jefferies, said in a note, adding this was a positive for PMI’s rivals.

Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products was no longer a priority.

It recently scrapped an ambition for $1 billion in net
revenues to come from sales of such products by 2025.

Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch brand ZYN,
Olczak said, adding it had been too optimistic around acceptance of
big tobacco companies operating outside of nicotine.

PMI also announced updated medium-term targets
including for revenue and earnings per share, and ambitious volume targets for IQOS and ZYN.

ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S. would help drive an expected
$2 billion in revenues there in 2024, even before IQOS ILUMA,
executives said.

Oct 22 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International’s (PMI) shares hit record highs on Tuesday after the cigarette maker raised its annual profit forecast
and beat third-quarter estimates thanks to higher prices and strong
demand for its smoking alternatives.

PMI has invested billions of dollars in developing substitutes for cigarettes as health-conscious consumers
switch to smoking alternatives in some markets, including its IQOS heated tobacco device
and ZYN nicotine pouches, which are now a key focus for investors.

U.S. ZYN shipments in the quarter grew 41.4% over the prior-year period, rebounding after supply constraints curtailed rapid growth.
The Marlboro maker has been investing to expand production capacity for ZYN, in an effort to meet
strong demand.

The company’s flagship heated tobacco device, IQOS, also saw strong
growth in regions such as Japan, Europe and Indonesia,
reassuring investors after volumes lagged expectations in the past.

„We delivered exceptionally strong performance, with record quarterly net revenues and earnings per share,“ said Chief
Executive Officer Jacek Olczak, adding IQOS growth had also accelerated.

PMI’s shares rose 9%, and remained almost 8% higher at 11.43 a.m.
